BAYLE, Antoine (Antoine L. J. Bayle, 1799–1858), a French psychiatrist, founder of the study of general paresis. Bayle identified this disease as an independent entity and for the first time (Recherches sur les maladies mentales, Paris, 1822) provided a detailed description of its clinical picture, which he later supplemented with pathological anatomical data.
