BENZIDINE DYES are obtained from benzidine by treatment with nitrous acid. The tetrazo compounds formed in this manner, when combined with phenols and amines, yield yellow, red, blue, and violet dyes. In microtechnique, the most commonly used are Congo red (see) and benzopurpurin (see).
