Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

DROMOMANIA, an irresistible urge to change one's place, may be a symptom of acute attacks of certain mental diseases, for example, phases of manic-depressive psychosis (most often depressions), epileptic equivalents, and so forth. As a more or less chronic phenomenon, dromomania finds expression in vagrancy, the inclination toward which is frequently a companion of both schizophrenia and certain forms of constitutional psychopathies (see also Impulsive insanity).
