STRASHUN, Ilya Davidovich (born 1892), figure in higher medical education in the USSR, physician, member of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks). Upon graduating from the medical faculty of Moscow University, he served as a military physician (1915-1918). During the Civil War, he served on the Caucasus Front. After the end of the war, starting in 1921, Strashun headed the health education department of the People's Commissariat of Health of the RSFSR for 10 years, serving as one of the most prominent leaders and theoreticians of health education for a number of years. He was the head of All-Union conferences on health education, editor of the journals Health Education, Healthy Village, and others, and head and board member of the People's Commissariat of Health publishing house (Gosmedizdat). From the very establishment of the Department of Social Hygiene at the Second Moscow University (1923), he was a senior assistant to Professor Z. P. Soloviev and one of its actual leaders. He was a participant in the work of the medical methodological commission of Glavprofobr and later a member of the State Academic Council until its disbandment (1932). He was one of the initiators of the sanitary-prophylactic faculty and its permanent dean from the moment of its organization at the First Moscow Medical Institute, where he taught a course on the history of medicine. He was the organizer and head of the Soviet pavilion at the International Hygiene Exhibition in Dresden in 1930. At present (1935), Strashun is the head of higher medical education at the People's Commissariat of Health of the RSFSR and managing editor of the journal Na fronte zdravookhraneniya (On the Health Care Front). He was a direct participant in the medical education reform of 1934. He served as a member of the editorial bureau of the Great Medical Encyclopedia and as the first editor of the medical department of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia.
