Summary

The lip reflex consists of the contraction of the orbicularis oris muscle and protrusion of the lips into a pout upon percussion of the mouth region. This reflex is enhanced in pseudobulbar palsy and shows a marked increase in tetany, especially in children.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

LIP REFLEX consists in the fact that percussion in the region of the m. orbicularis oris leads to the contraction of this muscle and to the protrusion of the lips in the form of a trough. The lip reflex is increased, taking on a sucking form, in pseudobulbar palsy (Toulouse, Vurpas). On the other hand, a sharp increase in this phenomenon is noted in tetany, especially in cases of infantile tetany (Escherich, Thiemich).
