SOMNIFEN, a solution of diethylamine salts of diethyl- and isopropyl-barbituric acids in a mixture of water, alcohol, and glycerin. It is a pale yellow liquid with an aromatic odor and taste. It is used as a hypnotic in doses of 30 drops orally. It is available in ampoules for intramuscular and intravenous administration. Its mechanism of action is the same as that of Veronal.
