Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
AFFECTIVE PSYCHOSES, a term used by some psychiatrists (Ziehen, Bleuler) to designate endogenous mental diseases based on a primary disorder of the affective sphere, i.e., manic-depressive psychosis (or mania and melancholia for those who do not recognize it as a single nosological entity), and related diseases. Reactive psychoses, as diseases caused by an exogenous disturbance of affective equilibrium, are not included here.
