Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
ALGOLOGY (from Latin algae - seaweed, and Greek logos - science), a branch of botany dedicated to the study of algae (see). Algology has played a major role in elucidating the nature of the sexual process, the physiology of reproduction, the alternation of generations in organisms, and others. Aside from its theoretical significance, algology has also acquired important practical significance in the study of the microscopic population of water bodies (see Hydrobiology), since the composition of the algal flora is often an excellent indicator for assessing water quality.
