ALLANTOIN, C4H6N4O3, is one of the end products of purine metabolism, found in the urine of humans and animals, in the amniotic fluid of cows, etc., as well as in plants.
It is obtained by the oxidation of uric acid in an alkaline environment; it crystallizes in prisms and is slightly soluble in water. The melting point is 231°C.
