ANONYMOUS OF THE PALATINATE. In the fifties of the 19th century, extremely interesting and for that time precise data were published under this pseudonym regarding the incubation period of syphilis and the rarity of positive inoculations of secretion from papules onto syphilitics. Hoffmann managed to ascertain that the Anonymous of the Palatinate was Julius Böttinger, a physician from Frankenthal in the Palatinate (Germany), who practiced in that area for nearly 50 years and enjoyed great and well-deserved popularity.
