Summary

The Asclepiads were an ancient Greek guild of physicians who claimed descent from Asclepius and were known for their guild exclusivity and strict ethical codes. Originating notably from the Coan school of Asclepiads, this tradition produced the famous physician Hippocrates.

ASCLEPIADS, an ancient Greek caste of physicians who claimed descent from Asclepius (see). This brotherhood is notable for its exceptional concern for professional honor and guild exclusivity. Characteristic of the Asclepiads is their oath, in which they stated, among other things: «I swear to admit to the participation in teaching, reading, and the rest of the instruction my sons, the sons of my teacher, and all disciples enrolled and bound by the medical oath. Besides them, no one else». Hippocrates (see) emerged from the Coan school of Asclepiads.
