Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

BACTERIOPROTEINS, pyogenic (pathogenic) substances first extracted by Buchner from microbial bodies through special treatment. Their pyogenic effect depends on a positive chemotactic action on leukocytes. Bacterioproteins are found in both pathogenic and non-pathogenic microbes, and, due to this, the injection of killed saprophytes can cause suppuration. Bacterioproteins are heat-stable and are not destroyed even by heating up to 120° for an hour.
