Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

BACTERIOSCOPY, a method of studying microbes based on their microscopic examination. Bacterioscopy makes it possible to study microbes both in a living state with the help of a "hanging drop" (movement and reproduction of microbes) and in a dead state, after fixation and staining by one method or another (morphology, fine structure of the microbe bodies).
