Summary

Biogenesis is a biological term that asserts that all living organisms originate exclusively from pre-existing living matter. This concept stands in direct opposition to the theory of abiogenesis, which suggests life could arise from non-living, inorganic matter.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

BIOGENESIS (from the Greek bios—life and genesis—origin), a term denoting, in contrast to abiogenesis, the origin of all living things throughout the entire historical period of the Earth only from living matter, whereby the possibility of its appearance from the inorganic world is not admitted.
