CARYO- (from Greek karyon-nucleus): karyogamy-union of nuclei during sexual reproduction; karyokinesis-division of the nucleus with the formation of chromosomes (karyomitosis); karyolymph-"nuclear sap"; karyolysis-dissolution of the nucleus during degeneration; caryomeres-granular portions of which chromosomes consist during the synapsis stage in karyokinesis; karyomerites-nuclei formed from the maternal nucleus but containing only a portion of the normal number of chromosomes or even a single chromosome; karyoplasm-nuclear substance as distinguished from the substance of the cell body (protoplasm); karyosome-so-called nucleolus, or nucleolus of the nuclei of higher animals and plants and some protozoa.
