CRATAEGUS OXYACANTHA L., common hawthorn, a shrub from the family Rosaceae. Found everywhere in the temperate climate in the USSR and Western Europe. In medicine, the flowers and fruits of the plant are used. The active principles have not been established. It is used as a harmless tonic in diseases of the heart, reducing the number of pulse beats. Hawthorn does not replace digitalis and does not act on edemas or in a diuretic manner, but according to some (Huchard), it is suitable for continuing and maintaining the effect produced by digitalis. Preparations: fluid extract of Crataegi (from seeds), 3-4 drops 3-5 times a day. Syrupus Crataegi, by teaspoonfuls 3-5 times a day. Tinct. Crataegi from flowers, 10 drops 3-5 times a day, from seeds--10-15 drops 1 time a day. Treatment is continued for months; no harmful side effects have been observed.
