Summary

Hopcalite is a specially prepared mixture of certain metal oxides that catalytically oxidizes carbon monoxide to CO2 when air passes through it. It was recommended for use as a carbon monoxide absorbent in gas masks.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

HOPCALITE, a specially prepared mixture of certain metal oxides, which produces catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide into CO2 when air containing it passes through it. The most well-known and effective H. of the following composition is known: MnO2-50%, CuO-30%, Co2O3-15%, Ag2O-5%. When all preparation conditions are observed and with complete absence of moisture, the time of action of H. as a catalyst is unlimited, even with CO concentration in the air up to 10% or more, for which reason, mainly American authors, recommend H. for use as an absorbent for CO in gas masks. H. can be used for qualitative and quantitative determination of CO in air.
