VYSOTSKY, Nikolai Fedorovich (1843-1922), professor of surgical pathology at Kazan University (from 1881 to 1904). He received his medical education at Kazan University, where he later specialized in surgery and otology and defended his doctoral dissertation on "The Doctrine of the Origin and Development of Cancer of the Lower Lip" (Kazan, 1872). His main scientific works concern not only medicine but also archaeology and ethnography. In the field of medicine, in addition to surgical and otological works, V. left behind a number of articles and popular notes on bacteriology, epidemiology, and the history of medicine. The latter circumstance reflects V.'s activity in the field of public health; this activity was vividly expressed in his propaganda of the zemstvo-regional struggle against the diphtheria epidemic that covered all the Lower Volga region in the 1880s and 1890s. V. was the organizer and chairman of the special regional congress of zemstvo and city officials and physicians of the Volga and Kama regions convened for this purpose in Kazan in 1896. Thanks to the initiative of Vysotsky and with the moral support of this congress, it was possible to obtain a government subsidy for the construction of a bacteriological institute at Kazan University, in the expenses for the construction of which zemstvo and city institutions and private individuals also participated. V. was the first director of this institute.
The main scientific works of V.: "On the Artificial Tympanic Membrane" (Proceedings of the Society of Kazan Physicians, 1871); "The Lymphatic System of the Aponeuroses Covering Muscles" (ibid., 1877-78); "On the Plague under Alexei Mikhailovich" (Collection of Articles on the Plague, Kazan, 1879); "Medical Views of Our People in Proverbs and Sayings" (Historical Herald, 1903); "Essays on the History of Folk Medicine" (Kazan, 1911).
