ACUMETER (from the Greek akouo—I hear, and metron—measure), an apparatus for examining hearing acuity; the basic requirement that an apparatus must satisfy, according to the idea of Politzer, is the constancy of sound intensity; the complex sound produced by the Politzer acumeter corresponds to the tone C2 and is perceived by a normal ear at a distance of 15 m.
