Summary

Agnathia is a rare congenital malformation characterized by the absence of the lower jaw. It is typically combined with underdevelopment of the oral cavity organs, such as the tongue, and is often associated with otocephaly. Infants born with this condition are non-viable.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

AGNATHIA (from the Greek negative particle a- and gnathos - jaw), absence of the lower jaw; represents a congenital malformation; usually combined with underdevelopment of the organs of the oral cavity (for example, the tongue). As a rule, there is simultaneously observed one or another degree of displacement toward the midline and fusion of the lower parts of the auricles - otocephaly (see). Monsters with agnathia are non-viable.
