Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
ALTMANN, Richard (1852-1900), professor of anatomy and histology in Leipzig. His main work, «Die Elementarorganismen u. ihre Beziehungen zu den Zellen» (1890), is devoted to the structure of protoplasm. Using a special fixation and staining method, Altmann discovered granularity in the protoplasm of most cells, the elements of which he called bioblasts (see), considering them to be the elementary bearers of the vital properties of protoplasm; the cell itself is, as it were, a colony of bioblasts as the elementary bearers of life.
