DEYNEKA, Dmitry Ivanovich (born 1876), histologist, professor at Leningrad University and the State Institute of Medical Knowledge. After graduating from St. Petersburg University in 1902, he was retained at the department of anatomy and histology under Dogel, where he soon took the position of assistant. In 1912, he was elected professor of histology at the Psychoneurological Institute; in 1922, he took a position at Leningrad University. During foreign trips, he worked with Ramón y Cajal in Madrid, Prévost and Nicolas in Paris, and Waldeyer in Berlin. D.'s scientific works relate 1) to the histology of the nervous system (nerves of the tympanic membrane, nervous system of the ascarid, the effect of temperature on nerve regeneration); 2) to bone tissue, using a special method of staining and its significance in histological technique. The school founded by D. gained considerable recognition abroad. Since 1922, Deyneka has been editing the "Russian Archive of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology."
