VOROBYEV, Vladimir Petrovich (born in 1876 in Odessa), professor of anatomy, Honored Professor of the USSR. He graduated from the medical faculty in Kharkov in 1903. While still a student, he wrote three papers, which were awarded two gold medals and the Professor M. M. Alekseyenko prize. V. was a student of A. Belousov (Kharkov) and Stieda (Königsberg). From 1908 to 1910, he headed a department in Kharkov.

In 1910, he was elected to the chair of normal anatomy at the Kharkov Women's Medical Institute. In 1913, he was elected in Yuryev to the chair of Rauber, but was not confirmed by the Minister of Public Education Kasso. In 1917, he was elected in Kharkov to the chair of normal human anatomy at the university's medical faculty and was re-elected in Yuryev. His field of research: macro-microscopy, comparative neurology, and techniques for preparing pathological-anatomical museum specimens. V.'s main works are studies in the field of the innervation of the heart, as well as the stomach. V. proposed research methods that make it possible to establish a connection between macroscopy and histology; he proposed a theory of wrist bone dislocations; hypotheses about the connection of the lymphatic system with the venous system and about the role of lymphoid tissue in the intestine; and methods for preparing educational specimens. He is currently engaged in publishing a textbook on human anatomy with the cooperation of the majority of anatomists in the USSR. V.'s works were awarded the Lenin Prize in 1927. From March to July 1924, V. was occupied with the embalming of the body of V. I. Lenin,

which is preserved to this day. A school of V.'s students is working on the comparative innervation of humans and animals. Herzens" (Medizinische Klinik, 1926, No. 24); "Methodik d. Untersuchungen von Nervenelementen des makro- und makro-mikroskopischen Gebietes" (Berlin, 1925); "Die Methode d. Durchleuchtung u. ihre Anwendung zur Magennervenuntersuchung" (X Internationaler Kongress f. Medizin, Budapest, 1910).

VOROBYEV, Viktor Alexandrovich (born in 1864), one of the greatest phthisiologists-clinicians and public health physicians of the USSR. After graduating from the medical faculty of Moscow University in 1888, he completed his residency under Professor Ostroumov. His scientific-pedagogical and research work proceeded successively as a privat-docent (1898), then professor of the chair of private pathology and therapy (1901–1909), and, finally, as head of the Hospital Therapeutic Clinic (1909–1910). In the period 1911–1917, Vorobyev conducted an optional course on the clinic of tuberculosis and gave lectures on the pathology and therapy of tuberculosis for physicians. In 1921, he received a professorship upon the establishment of a new chair of tuberculosis at Moscow State University. Since 1922, he has been the director of the State Scientific Tuberculosis Institute (People's Commissariat of Health). From 1914 to the present, he has been in charge of the Kryukovo and Zakharyino sanatoriums. The development of the public fight against tuberculosis in our country is associated with V.'s name; he is one of the founders of the All-Russian League for the Fight Against Tuberculosis and the permanent chairman of the league's board.

From the first days of the founding of the People's Commissariat of Health, V. has been a permanent consultant to the tuberculosis sub-department and an active participant in the modern anti-tuberculosis movement. V. is the permanent chairman of the organizing bureau and a member of the presidium of all All-Union congresses on tuberculosis. V. was also an active editor of the journals "Tuberculosis" and "Bulletin of the Society for the Fight Against Tuberculosis," and at the present time, he edits the journal "Questions of Tuberculosis." III, No. 2, 1925); 7) "Long-term Results of Sanatorium Treatment of Tuberculosis Patients" (ibid., vol. IV, No. 1, 1926).
