RAUBER August (August Rauber, 1841-1917), anatomist. Even as a student in Munich, he held the position of assistant in the anatomical institute, where under the guidance of Professor Bischof he studied the relationships between organisms and made his first scientific works in the field of histology and embryology.

In 1865, R. defended his doctoral dissertation, and in 1869 he received the right to give lectures in anatomy; in 1872, he received the position of prosector at the University of Basel, but in the same year, at the invitation of Professor His, he took the position of prosector at the Leipzig University.

In 1886, he was confirmed in the position of ordinary professor of the department of normal anatomy at the University of Dorpat (Yuryev). In this last position, R. worked for 25 years, retiring in 1911.

The scientific works of R. and his students covered three areas: anatomy, the history of organ development, and anthropology. In Dorpat, he wrote and published several books in German on the woman question and women's equality, of which he was an advocate.

An outstanding work of this last period is a guide to human anatomy, published in German and which went through six editions in a short time (this guide was to a large extent a revision by R. of the Quain-Hoffmann guide).

Later it was luxuriously published in Germany in the edition of Professor Friedrich Kopsch of the Berlin University (Rauber-Kopsch, 'Lehrbuch und Atlas der Anatomie des Menschen') and as such received worldwide distribution (Vol. I-VI, Lpz., 1922-23).

In 1912, under the editorship of Professor Dogel, it was also published in Russian.
