Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

ANAL EROTICISM, a psychoanalytic term denoting sexual experiences associated with the irritation of the mucous membrane of the rectum and anus, which, according to Freud, is one of the "erogenous zones"; peculiarly pleasant sensations during defecation, retention of fecal masses in children, etc., are part of the child's still vague and undifferentiated sexual drive. Normally, the anal erogenous zone subsequently loses its sexual character, except in cases of perversions (see Coprophilia, Pederasty).
