Summary

Appendicostomy is a surgical procedure involving the creation of a fistula of the vermiform appendix for treating chronic ulcerative colitis. The appendix is sutured to a skin wound, allowing for medication administration into the colon, and typically closes spontaneously after treatment.

Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)

Appendicostomy, a fistula of the vermiform appendix, created according to the proposal of Weir and Ketley for the treatment of chronic ulcerative colitis. The vermiform appendix is sutured into a skin wound (see figure), is then opened, and a thin rubber tube is inserted into its lumen for the administration of medicinal substances into the colon (solutions of silver nitrate, tannin, etc.; see Colitis-treatment of them). After treatment is completed (usually several months), the rubber tube is removed, and the fistula in most cases closes on its own; occasionally it is necessary to cauterize the mucous membrane of the vermiform appendix with a thermocauter-, and in rare cases even to surgically close the fistula by removal of the vermiform appendix.
