Arning, Edward, a renowned dermatologist, was born in 1855 in Manchester (England). He was an assistant to Prof. Simons (Simons, Berlin) and Neisser (Neisser, Breslau). In 1883, on the Hawaiian Islands, he studied leprosy and, after working for three years, established the possibility of transmitting leprosy by inoculating it into a condemned criminal. In 1887, Arning was elected chief physician of the dermatovenereology department at the Allgemeines Krankenhaus in Hamburg. Arning's works from this period brought him fame as a major dermatologist, and when the University of Hamburg was founded in 1919, Arning was elected professor of the dermatology clinic. In 1924, Arning, due to his length of service, left the clinic.
