MESCHERSKY Herman Ivanovich (born 1874), professor of dermatology and venereology; graduated in 1898 from the medical faculty of Moscow University, in the dermatovenereological clinic of which he remained from the first days of his medical practice until 1920, first as an intern and then as an assistant; from 1908 Meschersky was an associate professor. From 1920 to 1925 Meschersky was a professor at the 2nd Moscow State University, and from 1925 at the 1st Moscow State University. Actively interested in the public organization of the fight against venereal diseases, Meschersky was in 1917-19 a member of the Commission for the Fight Against Venerealism, first independent and then attached to the People's Commissariat of Health, participated in the development of the project for a State Venereal Institute, was a member of the organizing bureau of three all-union venereological congresses convened after 1917. Meschersky was from 1923 a member of all Soviet dermatovenereological societies and from 1930 chairman of the Moscow Society, a member of the editorial boards of the 'Russian Journal of Dermatology', 'Moscow Medical Journal', 'Central Medical Journal', 'Russian Clinic' and the 'Great Medical Encyclopedia'. To Meschersky belong over 150 printed works on various questions of dermatology and venereology in Russian and foreign languages. The most important Russian works published separately: 'Toward the doctrine of idiopathic progressive atrophy of the skin and its relation to scleroderma' (dissertation, Moscow, 1904); 'On trophic ulcers' (Moscow, 1911); 'Basic information on skin and venereal diseases' (Moscow, 1917, popular course); 'On the treatment of syphilis' (Moscow, 1921). Of the journal articles and reports by Meschersky in recent years, special mention should be made of: 'De l'influence des infections typhoidiques sur la reaction B.-W.' (Ann. de dermatol. et syph., 1922, № 3); 'On early syphilis of the kidneys' (Russian Journal of Dermatology, vol. I, № 1, 1924); 'Some new stigmata of congenital syphilis' (Urol. a. cutan. review, vol. XXXIV, № 1, 1930); 'La re- et super-infection syphilitique' (Rapports et comptes-reports du VIII Congres international de derm. et syphil., Copenhagen, 1930).
