BRONNER, Volf Moiseevich (born in 1876), revolutionary physician, major organizer of healthcare and scientific figure. Studied at Tomsk University, from which in 1899 he was expelled for participation in student disturbances. In the same year he went to Berlin, where he joined the Berlin Russian social-democratic group. In 1900 he received the degree of Doctor of Medicine from Berlin University and passed state examinations in Kazan. In 1902, upon returning to Tomsk, he participated in the organization of groups there. In 1903 he was a member of the Siberian social-democratic union and a member of the Tomsk committee of the RSDRP. In 1904 B. joined the Bolsheviks and led the October movement of 1905 in Tomsk. In 1906 he emigrated to Paris; here B. actively participated in the activities of the Paris Bolshevik group. At the same time he conducted intensive scientific work in the clinics and institutes of Paris, completed by a series of works devoted to various questions of urology and gonorrhea. In 1913 he returned illegally to Russia. Here B. was arrested and under the old case and for the call in 1905 to organize an armed uprising in Tomsk was sentenced to one year of solitary confinement. After his release B. again devoted himself to scientific work at Moscow University. From 1918 B. works in the People's Commissariat of Health, first as scientific secretary, and then head of the subdepartment for the fight against venereal diseases. From this period and until the present time he has been the leader and creator of the entire anti-venereal organization in the RSFSR. Through his efforts and initiative, the first State Venereological Institute in the Republic (named after V. M. Bronner) was created in Moscow for the training of venereologist-social workers and the study of questions of experimental, clinical and social venereology; the latter discipline is the brainchild of B. (he holds the chair of social venereology at the State Venereological Institute). Venereal dispensaries in Moscow, Smolensk and Omsk are named after B. Since 1924 B. has headed the Department of Medical Education of the People's Commissariat of Education of the RSFSR, being a member of the board of the Main Professional Education Committee, chairman of the medical methodological commission and a member of the State Scientific Council. In 1927 B. was appointed head of the department for the fight against social diseases of the People's Commissariat of Health. Since 1924 B. edits the journal "Venereology and Dermatology" founded by him, and since 1927 he is editor of the venereology and dermatology section of the Great Medical Encyclopedia.
