FINGER Ernst (Finger Ernest, born 1856), professor of dermatology and venereology in Vienna; received his medical education in 1873-78 at the University of Vienna, choosing while still a student, under the influence of the leading scientists who taught dermatology and venereology, Hebra, Neumann, as his specialty skin and venereal diseases. From 1879 to 1884, F. was an assistant and associate professor at the university clinic in Vienna, and from 1902 to 1928, a full professor and head of this clinic. The scientific and practical activities of F. took place not only in the clinic but also in the outpatient clinic he created at the largest hospital - Wiener algemeines Krankenhaus, as well as in the Kaiser Franz Joseph Ambulatorium, where he conducted special courses for dermatologists; for 15 years (1885-1900), F. at the Institute of Weichselbaum, together with Landsteiner, conducted the first work on vaccinating monkeys with syphilis. and venereal diseases, of which the most famous are the studies on syphilis in monkeys, hereditary syphilis, syphilitic rashes, pathological anatomy of chronic gonorrhea and prostatitis, on lupus. -F. is the author of popular among doctors - dermatologists guides: "Die Syphilis und die venerischen Krankhei-ten" (Vienna, 1886); "Die Blennorhoe der Sexualorgane" (Lpz.-Vienna, 1888); "Die Vererbung der Syphilis" (Lpz.-Vienna, 1892); F. was chairman of the Vienna Dermatological Society and a member of the board of the German Dermatological Society, as well as a member of a number of scientific societies in Europe and America. FINSEN Niels Ryberg (Niels Ryberg Finsen, 1860-1904), Danish scientist, the first to apply light therapy. Until 1893, he was prosector of anatomy in Copenhagen, then devoted himself exclusively to the study of the physiological action of light. From 1896 to 1904, he was director of the Institute of Phototherapy in Copenhagen. His main works: on the treatment of smallpox (1894), on the use of concentrated chemical light rays (for the treatment of lupus) (1896), "La Pho-totherapie" (Paris, 1899). From 1899, the works of the Finsen Institute in Copenhagen began to be published. In 1903, he received the Nobel Prize.
