GIBERT, Camille (Camille Melchior Gibert, 1797-1866), a prominent French dermatologist and syphilologist, physician at the Saint-Louis Hospital in Paris; he wrote a number of manuals on dermatology and syphilology that were translated into foreign languages, and was a major experimenter in the field of syphilis. Gibert described the skin disease known by his name, pityriasis rosea, and introduced the combined (iodine + mercury) treatment of syphilis using Gibert's syrup ("De l'iode et du potassium dans le traitement des affections syphilitiques", Paris, 1845).
