ASPERITAS UNGUIUM (from the Latin asper - rough), syn. scabrities unguium, a disease of the nail plates caused by insufficient adhesion of the elements of the nail substance. The nails become rough, fibrous, thinned, brittle, and crack. Various external harmful factors can cause asperitas unguium. It is frequently encountered in late secondary and congenital syphilis (scabrities unguium syphilitica, or onyxis craquele [Fournier]).
