AZUROPHILIA (from azure and Greek philia - love), the ability of certain plasma inclusions to metachromatically stain purplish-red with azure (see) when stained with mixtures containing this dye. - Azurophilic granularity - non-permanent granular inclusions in the plasma of non-granulocytes (agranulocytes) of all vertebrates, which stain in mixtures containing azure in a bright purplish-red color. Azurophilic granularity is more commonly found in large lymphocytes of the blood. According to some views (Rarheim), azurophilic granularity is an expression of the temporary secretory activity of the cell.
