Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
GRANULAR (from the Latin granum — grain), grainy. For example, one speaks of granular atrophy of the kidneys when their surface acquires an uneven grainy appearance. Usually, a granular appearance is observed in pathology during atrophic and cirrhotic processes. One may also speak of granular cellular structures (in histology) when revealing secretory granules, the mitochondrial apparatus, and the like within the cell protoplasm.
