ULEZKO-STROGANOVA, Klavdiya Petrovna (born 1860), professor, known as a pathohistologist of the female reproductive system. She graduated from the Women's Medical Courses (at the former Nicholas Military Hospital) in 1886. From 1890 she began working in the gynecological hospital of the Clinical Institute for the Advanced Training of Physicians. In 1903 she moved to the former Lying-in Institute (now the Central Scientific Research Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology), where she still works. In 1921 she presented her dissertation on the topic «Uterine fibromyoma, its histology and pathogenesis, as well as various types of its degeneration, including malignant». In 1928 she was approved by the People's Commissariat of Health as a professor of the Department of Normal and Pathological Histology in Obstetrics and Gynecology opened at the institute. At present she is a consultant on microscopic diagnostics (for medical institutions and health protection of the USSR) in order to combat cancer diseases. Ulezko-Stroganova has about 70 scientific papers relating predominantly to pathological histology in obstetrics and in diseases of the female reproductive system. Ulezko-Stroganova has repeatedly spoken at All-Union and International congresses, was elected to the honorary presidium, and is a member of many societies. In 1910 she was elected an honorary member of the Leningrad Gynecological Society. UHLENHUTH, Paul (Paul Uhlenhuth, born 1878), one of the major microbiologists of Germany. Among his numerous works, one should note the application of the precipitation reaction in sanitary-hygienic and forensic-medical practice. Uhlenhuth further proved the therapeutic significance of atoxyl in spirochetoses, studied experimental rabbit syphilis, discovered the spirochete of Weil's disease during the World War and produced a therapeutic serum against it. Uhlenhuth established that water-saprophytic spirochetes can transform into pathogenic ones and behave like true Weil spirochetes. Uhlenhuth was the first to inoculate relapsing fever into rats and mice and indicated methods of morphological and serological differentiation between the causative agents of African, American, and European relapsing fevers. Great interest is represented by Uhlenhuth's works on the paratyphoid group and on tuberculosis. Veterinary science is also much indebted to Uhlenhuth (anti-foot-and-mouth disease serum, identification of avian diphtheria and fowl pox, isolation of the filterable virus of swine plague, etc.). Uhlenhuth edits the Archiv für Hygiene and, together with W. Kolle and R. Kraus, is a co-editor of the 3rd edition of the capital 10-volume manual «Handbuch der pathogenen Mikroorganismen» (Jena-Berlin-Vienna, 1928-31). At present, Uhlenhuth is the director of the Hygiene Institute at the University of Freiburg (Germany).
