GRAWITZ, Paul (Paul Grawitz, b. 1850), noted German pathologist. Received medical education in Halle and Berlin (1869-74). From 1875 to 1886, served as assistant at the Berlin Pathological Institute as the closest assistant to Virchow. From 1886 to 1920, was professor of pathological anatomy in Greifswald. Of more than 70 scientific works by G. in various fields of pathological anatomy, the most famous are those concerning special kidney tumors designated as 'Grawitz tumors'; G. at that time (1884), having developed the histology of these tumors, proved that they originate from adrenal nodules found in the kidneys during the embryonic formation of the latter, and proposed for them the name 'hypernephroma' ('Die Entstehung von Nierentumoren aus Nebennierengewebe', Arch. f. klin. Chir., B.XXX, 1884). At present, the origin of these tumors from kidney epithelium is considered more probable, which is why there is a tendency to replace the name 'hypernephroma' with the indifferent designation 'Grawitz tumor'. The works of G. and his students (Busse and others) are no less famous.

on inflammation of avascular tissues; here Grawitz puts forward the doctrine of the origin of leukocytes from collagen fibers; the latter, in his opinion, represent 'dormant cells', which, upon inflammatory irritation of the tissue, 'awaken' and transform into leukocytes. Finally, of considerable importance are G.'s studies on epithelial dental granulomas, establishing the development of epithelium in them from the gingival epithelial covering, works on the pathogenic significance of mold fungi, on jaundice of newborns, on the fibrinoid transformation of connective tissue.
