Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)
BELONE, a bony fish of the family Scomberesocidae. Belone vulgaris (garfish) lives in the Black Sea, and Belone acutus in the Mediterranean. The latter species, along with some others, is classed as poisonous because cases of poisoning have been observed when these fish are eaten. The poisonous properties of Belone have not been studied. The poisoning caused by Belone is classified under the type of "ciguatera" (see Barbus fluviatilis), which differs etiologically in a significant way from true fish venom poisoning.
