BELONOVSKY, Georgy Dmitrievich, Professor of Bacteriology at the State Institute for Medical Postgraduate Training (Leningrad); born in 1875. Graduated from the Military Medical Academy in 1899, and in 1902 defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Medicine: "On the Influence of Specific Hemolytic Serum on Artificial and Natural Anemia." From 1908, a privat-docent; from March 1917, a professor. Received his initial bacteriological education under the guidance of S. S. Botkin and V. I. Isaev. From 1905 to 1907, he worked in the laboratories of: Metchnikoff (Paris), Morgenroth (Berlin), Salkowski (Berlin), Maragliano (Genoa), Wright (London). Belonovsky took part in combating epidemics: scurvy (1899, Volga region), cholera (1908, 1909, 1910, Kronstadt), plague (1917, Trabzon), typhus (1919–20), etc. Belonovsky has over 60 scientific works, including a number of works on the experimental investigation of plague. Belonovsky described the first experience of using anti-typhoid vaccinations in Russia: "Anti-typhoid Vaccinations in France and England and the Experience of Their Application in Russia" ("Russky Vrach," 1913, No. 47).
