Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)

GREKOV, Aleksey Dmitriyevich (born 1873), director of the Regional Bacteriological Institute and professor of bacteriology at the Central Asian State University in Tashkent. He graduated from the Military Medical Academy in 1897. Upon graduation, he worked in Turkestan (Merv) as a military doctor (there he began working in the infirmary laboratory). From this time, his entire subsequent activity took place almost continuously in Central Asia. In 1907, he founded a bacteriological laboratory at the infirmary in Pishpek, and in 1918 he organized the Turkestan Regional Bacteriological Institute in Tashkent. Twice, in 1912 and 1924, he organized the fight against outbreaks of plague (in Persia and Ak-Kamysh). Grekov also took an active part in the organization of healthcare in Central Asia, first as a member of the Military-Sanitary Administration, and then as a member of the Scientific Medical Council of the People's Commissariat of Health of the Uzbek SSR. Grekov is also the organizer of the medical faculty of the Turkestan University and the responsible editor of the journal Medical Thought of Uzbekistan. Among Grekov's works, it is necessary to mention his dissertation, which went through two editions, 'Clinical Observations on the Effect of I. I. Metchnikoff's Sour Milk in Intestinal Diseases' (dissertation, St. Petersburg, 1907 and 1912).

GREKOV, Ivan Ivanovich (born 1867), a famous Russian surgeon. After graduating from the medical faculty of the University of Dorpat, he worked from 1895 in the surgical department of the Obukhov Hospital in Leningrad, where his entire subsequent surgical activity took place and where he served as head of the entire surgical department from 1926, and as chief physician of the hospital from 1927. Since 1915, Grekov has been a professor of the faculty surgery clinic, and later the hospital surgery clinic of the State Institute of Medical Knowledge. Grekov is an honorary member of the Pirogov Russian Surgical Society in Leningrad; an honorary member of the Society of Russian Surgeons; founder and editor of the journal Bulletin of Surgery and Border Areas. Grekov's printed works relate to various fields of surgery. In many issues, he is an innovator. His main works concern the treatment of skull defects ('Materials on the Question of Bone Defects of the Skull and Their Treatment', dissertation, St. Petersburg, 1901), surgery of the heart, lungs, large vessels, limbs, methods of wound treatment, treatment of tuberculosis, etc. However, Grekov worked most of all in the field of abdominal surgery: here he produced many works on the surgery of the stomach, colon, liver, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, hernias, ileus, etc. It is especially necessary to note the question of Bauhin-spasm and Bauhinoplasty, first raised by Grekov ('On Bauhinoplasty', Bulletin of Surgery, vol. VIII, book 22, p. 189, 1926); and on the operative treatment of volvulus of the sigmoid colon (Grekov's I and II methods—'On the Treatment of Volvulus of the Sigmoid Colon', XVI Congress of Russian Surgeons, p. 580, Moscow, 1924). A great merit of Grekov is the resumption, thanks to his energy, of the congresses of Russian surgeons in 1922, after a six-year break.
