Lyubimov Nikolai Matveevich (1852-1906), a renowned pathologist-anatomist and prominent public figure. In 1875, after graduating from the medical faculty of Kazan University, he was retained at the department of pathological anatomy of the same university as an assistant prosector. In 1877, he was sent abroad and for a significant time worked in Strasbourg under the guidance of the famous pathologist Recklinghausen. In 1879, he defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Medicine, after which he took the position of prosector at the department of pathological anatomy; in 1880, he was elected privat-docent, and in 1885, after the retirement of A. V. Petrov, he became professor of pathological anatomy at Kazan University. From 1896 to 1905, he served as dean of the medical faculty, and in 1905, he was elected rector of Kazan University. As a professor, L. raised the teaching of pathological anatomy and scientific work at his department to a very high level, and as dean, he greatly contributed to the improvement of the entire organization of the medical faculty of Kazan University, particularly in the construction of new clinics and a bacteriological institute. L. actively participated in the society of physicians at Kazan University, in which he was an honorary member in his later years.

The scientific works of L. mainly concern the pathological anatomy of infectious diseases; of these works, the most well-known are: "On the development of giant cells in tuberculosis" (dissertation, Kazan, 1879); "On the pathological anatomy of typhoid fever" (Journal of the Kazan Society of Physicians, Kazan, 1880); "Pathological anatomy and bacteriology of plague" (Kazan, 1897). In addition, L.'s research on changes in the liver and spleen in relapsing fever, on cirrhosis of the liver, scurvy, on multilocular echinococcus, on acute leukemia are known. Lyubimov authored well-known textbooks: "Course of Pathological Anatomy" (3rd ed., Kazan, 1890) and "Course of Bacteriological Research Methods" (Kazan, 1888).
