BROUARDEL, Paul (Paul Camille Hippolyte Brouardel, 1837-1906), head of the French forensic medicine school. He completed medical studies in 1859. Brouardel's first work on tuberculosis of the female reproductive organs appeared in 1865. After the death of Tardieu, in 1879 he received the chair of forensic medicine at the Paris medical faculty; at the same time he took over management of the journal "Annales d'hygiene publique et de medecine legale"; from 1880 he was a member of the Medical Academy. In 1884 he was elected president of the Hygiene Committee and directed its work until 1903. In 1892 he was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences. Brouardel's public activity was expressed primarily in his 18-year management of the medical faculty as dean (1883-1901), as well as in his duties as president of the Medical Society of the Seine, the Society of French Physicians, and member of many foreign societies. Brouardel's classical works in forensic medicine and hygiene were evaluated by his famous contemporaries as having no equal among his predecessors. His original works on poisoning, attempted rape, burns of the human body, drowning, abortion, sudden death, and traumatic diseases remain of high scientific value and contemporary interest to this day. Brouardel was also a major hygienist. Under his editorship and with his direct participation, the multi-volume publication "Traite d'hygiene" was begun in 1905, publie-en fascicules sous la direction de P. Brouardel, A. Chantemesse et E. Mosky, Paris. By 1928, 23 volumes had been published. Part of the first volumes appeared in a second edition.
