Finsen Apparatus, see Light Therapy. Finkelstein Boris Konstantinovich (1871-1931), outstanding surgeon. Graduated from the medical faculty of Kharkov University in 1894. In 1897, he defended his dissertation on "The pathology and therapy of subphrenic abscesses." From 1902-1918, he worked in Baku and Batumi. In 1918, he was elected professor and director of the first surgical clinic of the Azerbaijani University, in the organization of which he took an active part. From 1923, he headed the department of hospital surgery, remaining in this position until the end of his days. By resolution, the clinic was named after F. and two scholarships were established for doctors and students working in surgery. F., an enthusiast of surgery, combined in himself all the qualities necessary for brilliant surgical activity. Active participant in both Russian and international congresses; initiator, organizer and permanent chairman of the Baku Society of Surgeons. To his pen belong more than 60 scientific works, many of which are monographic: "Surgery of the spleen" (Kharkov, 1910); "Guide to general surgery" (Baku, 1921); "On the surgery of the bile ducts" (New Surgical Archive, vol. V, issues 2-3, vol. VI, issue 1, 1924). In the field of surgery of the bile ducts, F. had one of the largest materials among the surgeons of our Union. In the last year of his life, F. was elected to the Kharkov Institute for the Improvement of Physicians.
