BEARD, George (1839–1883), American neuropathologist, author of the book American Nervousness (1881), in which he argued that excessive strain and the difficulties of the struggle for existence in the United States of America created a new nervous disease; for the latter, Beard proposed his term "neurasthenia," which soon gained universal currency.
