Glycemia (sugar content in the blood, sugar)

Physiology, Biochemistry

Also known as: Blood sugar

Historical document, translated for reference. It reflects medical knowledge of the 1920s–30s and is not medical advice.

Summary

This 1930s encyclopedia entry defines glycemia as the sugar content of the blood, noting that the term is frequently used incorrectly to denote elevated blood sugar, for which the correct term is hyperglycemia.

Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

GLYCEMIA, sugar content in the blood, sugar level (Zuckerspiegel of German authors; often poorly translated by the expression "sugar mirror of the blood"). This term is frequently used to designate an increased sugar content in the blood. Since etymologically this is incorrect, it is better to speak of hyperglycemia when the amount of sugar increases.
