Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)
FEDYNSKY Sergey Ignatyevich (1876-1926), one of the greatest Russian pediatricians. Beginning in 1912, his pedagogical work began first as an assistant in the department of children's diseases at the Moscow Higher Women's Courses, then as an associate professor and finally as a professor at the Higher Medical School; from 1924 he was a professor at the first department of infant diseases in Russia. All of F.'s scientific works (21 in total) address the most pressing issues in pediatrics and represent great scientific value (serum treatment of scarlet fever and diphtheria, foreign bodies of the upper respiratory tract, pathogenesis of nutritional and digestive disorders, surgical treatment of pyloric stenosis in infancy, etc.). In his last years, F. worked extensively in the field of biochemical research. He outlined a number of interesting works on carbohydrate, cholesterol, salt, and nitrogen metabolism in infancy and on blood enzymes. A summary of his work on blood sugar in infants can serve as a monograph on the study of blood sugar under physiological and pathological conditions. He authored a work on the significance of carbohydrate metabolism in the clinical picture of intoxication in infants. His extensive, serious scientific research did not prevent F. from devoting much time to public life. He actively worked in the Pirogov Society, the Society for the Fight Against Child Mortality, commissions for the study of childhood tuberculosis, intersession conferences on childhood tuberculosis, in the organization of the OMM department, and in the journal for the study of early childhood. He presented reports at All-Union Congresses of Pediatricians, at the All-Russian Conference on OMM, at the I All-Russian Venereological Congress with a report on the social fight against syphilis in early childhood, etc. Lit.; Kisel A., Prof. S.
