Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)

GRANULOSIS RUBRA NASI (dermatitis micropapulosa erythematosa hyperidrotica chronica nasi infantum), red granulosis of the nose, a rare chronic disease of the skin of the nose, first described in 1901 by Jadassohn. The disease primarily affects weak, asthenic, acrocyanotic children between the ages of 6 and 17 years. On the bluish-red skin of the nose, and sometimes also on adjacent areas of the cheeks and upper lip, there are scattered in greater or lesser numbers soft round pink-red papules, the size of a pinhead to a pinpoint (rarely larger), which do not coalesce and do not itch, rarely transforming into vesicles and pustules. The disease is always accompanied by intense hyperhidrosis of the skin of the nose, and often there is general hyperhidrosis; the nose is cold even during the hottest time of year. Histologically: parakeratosis around the sweat pores, dilation of the vessels of the papillary and subpapillary layers of the dermis, lymphocytic infiltration around the latter and sweat glands, sometimes hypertrophy of the excretory ducts and coils of the sweat glands. Most authors consider granulosis rubra nasi to be a consequence of hyperhidrosis, while some associate it with tuberculosis. - Treatment (general strengthening, ointments, scarifications, X-rays, and many others) is usually unsuccessful; - the dermatosis almost always undergoes spontaneous regression with the onset of sexual maturity.
