GRINDELIA, Grindelia robusta Nuttall., a herbaceous plant of the composite family (Compositae), native to California. The commercial product consists of dried upper parts of flowering and leafy stems, tied in bundles. The stem is light gray-green, leaves are smooth, sticky (when heated), rarely toothed. The constituent principles - essential oil C23H36O2(OH)2, saponin, and the alkaloid grindeline - are little studied pharmacologically. In therapy, preparations from Grindelia herb (infusion 15.0-20.0:200.0 by the tablespoon) and liquid extract (by the dessert spoon every 2 hours) are used for bronchial asthma and bronchitis.
