Encyclopedia entry (1928–1936)

HALLAUER GLASSES (Hallauer), are used, mainly, in the form of protective eyewear for the eyes, both from light rays and from harmful ultraviolet rays. Hallauer glasses are available in various shades, from the lightest to the darkest (Nos. 1-6). They are manufactured by adding yellow and green dyes to ordinary smoked glass, as a result of which the glass acquires a grayish-yellow-green color. Hallauer glasses are especially recommended for aphakic eyeglasses, since for an eye deprived of the lens, which, as is known, has the property of blocking ultraviolet rays, such protection is particularly necessary.
