Encyclopedia article (1928–1936)
KOBERT Rudolf (Rudolf Eduard Robert, 1854-1918), known pharmacologist, professor first in Dorpat (Yuryev), and later in Rostock. Of K.'s works, special interest is represented by his experimental research on animals of the action of sphacelinic acid and cornutine, which he isolated from ergot ("Uber die Bestandteile und Wirkung des Mutterkorns", Lpz., 1884), then works clarifying the absorption of various iron preparations from the gastrointestinal tract, and works on plant hemagglutinants and especially on saponins. Along with experimental research works, K. is the author of a number of very well-known guides. His "Compendium der Arzneiverordnungslehre" (Stuttgart), which appeared in 1888 and by 1913 had gone through four editions in German (two Russian editions - SPB, 1894 and 1901), to the present time remains the best guide on prescription writing. Also very popular is the "Compendium der praktischen Toxikologie" (Stuttgart, 1st ed., 1888; 5th ed., 1912). Solid and original works are K.'s guides: "Lehrbuch der Pharmakotherapie" (Stuttgart, 1897) and

"Lehrbuch der Intoxikationen" (2nd ed., Stuttgart, 1902-06). K.'s last work, published posthumously, is devoted to saponins, which he had studied in previous years ("Die Saponingruppe", Hndb. d. exp. Pharmakologie, hrsg. v. A. Heffter, B. II, Halfte 2, Berlin, 1924).
