NEIDING Ivan Ivanovich (1830 - 1904), professor of forensic medicine at Moscow University (1879 -1901), one of the authoritative forensic medical experts of his time. Graduated from the medical faculty of Moscow University in 1860. For about 17 years (until 1879) he served as an ordinor at the Police Hospital, then for 13 years as a prosector at the Basmannaya Hospital. During a foreign trip (1867) he worked under Virchow, Riman and Skrzhechevsky. In 1864 he was invited as assistant prosector at the department of forensic medicine and from this time for 40 years he worked at Moscow University as prosector (from 1869) and professor (from 1879) of forensic medicine. In 1894 he received the title of honorary professor. From 1885 for 19 years he served as secretary of the medical faculty. Member of the Physical-Medical Society and the Moscow Juridical Society, founding member of the Society of Russian Physicians in memory of Pirogov. At the II, IV, VIII Pirogov Congresses he presided over the forensic medicine section. At the XII International Congress of Physicians in Moscow (1897) he headed the forensic medicine section and was a member of the executive committee, at whose request he compiled the book "Medical Societies in Russia" (Moscow, 1897). Being a forensic medical expert and pathoanatomist, N. held the opinion that thorough knowledge of pathological anatomy is necessary for a forensic physician. He raised the question of the necessity of teaching forensic medicine to lawyers. Most important scientific works: "On atherosclerosis of arteries" (dissertation, Moscow, 1864); "On the diagnostic significance of the strangulation groove on the neck in hanging and strangulation" (M., 1868).
